Samuel Smith was born in 1729 in Essex County, Virginia. He married Mary Webb in 1761. About five years later, they relocated to Granville County, North Carolina, and started a plantation called Abram's Plains.
Samuel died in the fall of 1800 and his will was probated in December 1800. He mentioned 27 enslaved people and a number of unnamed children:
